Tips for Quick Furnace Repairs

Even the most efficient, highly technical and well maintained heating units can break down or have mechanical issues. Maintenance avoidance is the most common causation of furnace repairs. During winter month furnace repairs become more dire and repairs need to be completed quickly to restore warmth to your home and its inhabitants. A common problem that can be easily fixed is a clogged filter. Filters are clogged by dust and other debris and should be changed or cleaned on a regular basis. Continued clogging ages your heating unit prematurely and will force the replacement of the machine's internal components. Heating systems are fitted with permanent or disposable filters check your manual and follow instructions to prevent system break downs.

Schedule a time each moth to check your furnace's filter for blockages. Further cleaning may be required depending upon the make and model of your furnace. Most manufacturers recommend vacuuming around your heating unit to remove dirt and dust from the heat exchange surfaces. Cleaning and detailed maintenance can be a DIY project or something you hire a HVAC professional to carry out. Unfortunately, Denver furnace repair is most commonly necessary during winter months when the heating units are being used the most. HVAC repair technicians are typically very busy during these months so scheduling regular maintenance before winter descends is the best way to avoid a chilly house and emergency furnace repairs.

Issues that lead to homeowners calling for furnace repair are usually thermostat malfunctions, tripped breakers, blown fuses, blower issues, temperature fluctuations, and a blown out pilot light. Some of these repair issues can be checked for and resolved by the homeowner without calling a repair service. If the thermostat is not working properly, it can be replaced. A tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse is often a quick repair as well. The pilot light can be relit, but before doing so make sure that there is no gas smell coming from the area. If you smell gas you could have a gas leak in which case you should leave the home immediately. Other issues can be repaired faster by calling a professional. Complete system shut downs, uneven heating and blower issues are better addressed by HVAC professionals.

Most furnace repairs are the same for both gas and electric. Gas furnace repair requires a more precaution due to the volatility of the heating fuel. Pilot lights go out for many reasons, but most commonly the reason is that they become clogged at the opening or the valve. Make sure to examine the pilot area closely to determine if this is the problem. If the opening is clogged, clean out all blockages and try to light the flame. If not, adjust the valve and then attempt to light the pilot. A pilot that will not stay lit may just have the flame set too low. The thermocouple could also be damaged. You can tighten the thermocouple nut to make the pilot stay lit. If you are still having problems with the pilot light call a HVAC company for further evaluation and repair- the issue could be larger than the pilot light itself.
